Insourcing/ Outsourcing – defining the right strategic-conceptual approach

Long-term contracted services typically are related to the complexity of the solution, high investments, high risks or extraordinary benefits – in any case a key driver leads to the long-term-nature of the business relationship. This - in most cases - also leads to complexity for the business relationship which more or less has to be tailor-made in order to cope with all aspects and changes over the lifetime of the cooperation. In all cases, valid for outsourcing and insourcing projects these activities add comprehensive complexity over several months to the companies’ organisations as a multitude of internal and external parties have to be involved. The following aspects are key at an early stage:

  • Main strategy and concept design under consideration of the project’s key targets
  • Prerequisites in terms of the company’s organisational structures, workflows and resources
  • Principles for managing, monitoring and communicating between the parties as well as within each of the organisations
  • Typical time frames
  • Contractual parameters and options

Via my business focus on the “right” strategic and conceptual set up for any outsourcing or insourcing project, I focus on the decision making process at a very early stage. Typically, this consulting phase leads to the fundamental decisions of a company for/ against such projects.

During the project the following basic questions are discussed/ answered:

  • Which concrete targets shall the project meet and which deadlines are essential to be met?
  • Which expectations are explicitly set for the character of cooperating with a service provider in a long-term scenario?
  • Are all project risks comprehensively analysed which counter-measures in place?
  • Does full transparency exist about all implications of the process on the company’s organisation ? Does this allow to reach the full target spectrum?
  • Are all internal and/or external resources fully available which are essential for successfully implementing the project?
  • How does a typical project flow look like and what is the tactics behind?
